Reach Your Top Career Potential

Two Common Job Search Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

May 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Read the following points picked from an email from a leading online job service, which said:

“To do your job search, here is what you will need:

• A resume that meets international standards

• Maximum reach with the maximum number of recruiters”

But I disagree with both the points (based on working with hundreds of job candidates). The truth is:

• You need a resume that meets the specific expectations of your target company/ industry. A successful resume is a like a business proposal - it needs to pack specifics for each opportunity. So while 75% content can remain the same, about 25% content needs to be addressed specific to the target company. So the CV for Citigroup in New York would be different than that for Barclays in London; the CV for IBM in New York would be different than that for IBM in Bangalore.

• There is no point maximizing reach with CV blasts to hundreds of recruiters. It goes around like a commodity and it can’t be the channel to rely on for getting success. Yes, there are many people who get jobs through Internet channels, but many of the good or challenging jobs don’t come there. Also, you need to do more due diligence of the prospective employer, if it’s not an established brand name.
