Work life balance - have you got it?

July 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Work life balance is a common topic in discussions with office colleagues and friends at home. But it rarely moves beyond listing the problems to making some real action.

Forget everybody else. Answer these questions for yourself:

1. Are you satisfied with the work you are doing?

2. Are you satisfied with the time and effort consumed by your job?

3. Are you satisfied with the amount of time you are able to spend of ‘non-office-work’ (i.e, family, self-interests, hobbies, etc)?

A majority of have said NO for 2 and 3, and some have also said NO for 1. This website is dedicated to helping you with 1 and 2, but we can also help you with 3.

The best way to create more time outside office work is to make a strict boundary of when your job can’t touch your non-job time. With email on cellphones and blackberries, it has become very difficult to do that but it really helps.

As an employee, it needs courage from your side to tell your team and managers that you will not be available during the weekend or during certain hours each day. Unless you speak that way, your desire to have a better work life balance will just remain a desire, and it also means you are not taking action on what you want.

And if your employer and work culture is such that 24×7 availability is needed, then consider a different job. Check out some of the directories like craigslist.com or loot.com, and you will find a variety of un-conventional jobs too.
